Gambling Safe with Your Project Funds

Gambling safe with your project funds from Kuna

At EUMETCAL workshop in June we did a workshop on the challenges in running an online project. We would like to share this experience with the CALMet Commons readers.

We had around 30 participants, that we divided into six groups (using the dice!). We wanted to work on a real project that could take place in a near future. We chose an online project about setting up a EUMETCAL team to assist WMO in delivering their next TtT course in 2015.

After a short introduction about the project we introduced the project timeline and milestones and six challenges during the lifetime of the project. Each group was given one challenge in order to save time and to be able to cover the topics in a given 60 minute time frame.

The groups worked on the challenges for 20 minutes; the challenges were as authentic examples as possible from real life. They demonstrated the critical points in communication, timeliness, trust and motivation - all very important for an online project management. The questions were also simple yet open-ended: "How would you suggest to deal with the situation? What action would you take?"

After the discussion within the group, each team had five minutes for sharing their proposals with the whole group. The main key message from each group was recorded in the summary slide.
We were happy to see many good proposals coming from the groups. It was also good to have something concrete as an outcome of the workshop in the end. Group work was necessary in order to be able to perform all the challenges in given time, and yet have time for some fruitful discussion.
