CALMet XV 2023

7 - 17 November 2023

Online, hosted by Deutscher Wetterdienst, Germany

Inspire, Share and Collaborate

CALMet XV Conference 2023 will be an event that brings together educators, trainers and managers from universities, research institutions, and National Meteorological and Hydrological Services. It provides an opportunity for a community from around the world to collaborate and network on workforce development in support of the global weather, water, and climate industry.

During the Conference, participants share experiences, expectations, and new ideas for applying emerging technologies and strategies in meteorology and hydrology education and training.

The Theme - Encouraging creative ways of working and learning together

During the past couple of years, we all experienced exceptional circumstances that required to quickly implement innovations in our work to keep the Meteorological Education and Training going within our organizations. As a result, we gained valuable experiences working and learning in online and hybrid environments. Now that the dust starts settling down very slowly, it is a good time to jointly look forward to seeing what opportunities the online and hybrid techniques offer to improve our (global) collaboration. It is also a good time to look backwards to see what we can learn from our experiences, and to investigate whether there are any new techniques on the horizon that could make our lives even more pleasant.

Therefore, we have split this year’s conference theme - Encouraging creative ways of working and learning together - in the following sub themes;

Collaboration;

  • How best to work together and use our network in an efficient way? What can strengthen the network and make it broader? What role can social media play in this?

  • How do we all contribute to WMO Global Campus?

Lessons learned;

  • Working and learning in a hybrid environment. What have we learned so far and how can we improve it?

Future challenges & opportunities;

  • How to fill the gap between wishes, visions and reality?

  • What ideas do we have for using virtual and augmented reality environments in our work successfully?

  • New and future ways of effective engagement in instruction. What will be the future approaches that we need to implement in our work in order to do it successfully?

The CALMet XV Conference

To increase the possibility for all practitioners in the Meteorological Education and Training Sector to take part in the CALMet experience, we again will offer the CALMet Conference as a “flipped-learning conference”. Rather than a series of presentations, we intend this event to be highly active and filled with opportunities for participants to interact. This is because we ask for the presentation materials to be posted and reviewed in advance, leaving valuable conference time to get familiar, investigate, question, discuss, debate, and share views and techniques on the challenges/opportunities arising.

The conference will be conducted fully online in both asynchronous and live format.

During the asynchronous pre-conference period (7-12 November 2023), the participants will be able to familiarize themselves with the resources and activities provided by the authors.

During the second week, which will be mostly synchronous, there will be a conference programme with themed sessions that will give the opportunity for the authors and the audience to meet and discuss. The session modes will vary between full plenaries and smaller special interest group discussions. Although the conference is in English, there is a possibility to form regional discussion groups in your own local languages.
